THE EDGEHILL SOCIETY

In 1887 William and Helena Babcock moved into their new residence, which they named Edgehill for its prominent hilltop location in San Rafael, California. Helena passed away in 1887, and in 1895 Mr. Babcock met and married Julia May Beck. It was Julia who began to transform Edgehill from a country home into an elegant Victorian mansion, while Mr. Babcock, an amateur botanist, transformed the 50 acres surrounding it.

It was only two years after the Babcocks had taken up residence at Edgehill that the Dominican Sisters relocated from Benicia to the same area as well and in 1890 filed for incorporation of Dominican College, which conferred its first BA degree in 1922. In 1920 Julia Babcock sold the mansion to the Dominican Sisters, and in that same year the Dominican College seniors moved into the new residence hall, Edgehill.

For many alumni Edgehill was a home away from home until its closing in 1985. A two-year restoration, funded by the generous gifts of our friends and alumni, brought this beautiful historic residence, now known as the Edgehill Mansion, back to life. Now home to campus departments such as Student Life, Campus Ministry, and Alumni Relations, Edgehill seems a natural choice as the symbol for a membership society honoring those donors who are securing Dominican's continuing educational legacy by remembering Dominican in their estate plans. It represents a celebration of their vision, values, and goals.

Becoming a member

Edgehill Society members are donors who have chosen to perpetuate their giving so that Dominican can continue to grow, innovate, provide an accessible and affordable education to all qualified students, and maintain its core values of study, reflection, community, and service. Through thoughtful planning you can provide for yourself, those you care about, and Dominican. Among the ways to do this are by designating a percentage or specific dollar amount from your estate through your will or revocable trust; making a gift that will pay you an income for life, such as an annuity or charitable trust; naming Dominican in an otherwise taxable retirement plan; or making Dominican the owner of a paid-up life insurance policy that is no longer needed. Tell us what your personal goals and your vision for a better world are, and we may have a way to help you achieve them.
